The girl talks about her childhood and her great love of her father. Specifically, “How I’d love to dance with my father again.” Throughout my childhood I had the opportunity to dance with my father and become very close to him. His features are very distinct and remain in my head when we are separated. His dark brown eyes are full of kindness and love. His short, curly brown hair is as soft as a fuzzy blanket. After a fresh shave, his face fells like silk to the touch. Though his size of 5’11” and 270 pounds can be intimidating and scary, he is nothing more than a large, loveable teddy bear. When he is full of anger, he tightens his jaw and scrunches his forehead causing wrinkles to form. His smile, however, with those straight, pearly white teeth, makes the room radiate with happiness and ease. His laughter, low and full of joy, is extremely contagious. Similar to his laughter, his hug warms the heart. Full of strength, his body holds others firmly yet gently to provide support. When we attended father-daughter dances at our church, the love and security I felt while spun me around were tremendous. I knew he was a man I could trust to never break my heart. By the look of this video, the little girl and I shared similar childhood experiences and the desire to dance with our fathers again.

Lee Ann Womak, “I Hope You Dance”: The video opens with a girl about six years old walking hand in hand with her baby sister. Any girl that has been privileged enough to be a sister can relate to how special a gift a little sister is. June 9, 1994 was the proudest day of my life as my “twin” was born. As the video zooms in on the two girls showing their similar facial features, I am reminded of my twin and best friend. Though her bald, melon-shaped baby head was laughable, her long light brown hair with golden highlights shimmers in the sun. Those big, bright hazel eyes shine with the innocence of a thirteen year old. Built with muscles and shape of a dacer, she has long muscular legs and a petite 5’2” frame. Though full of braces, her smile is big and beautiful. Along with her gorgeous smile, her face lights up and glows when she laughs in her high-pitched adorable giggle. In the video the girls smile and giggle together as they dance around. In seeing this, it appears that the sisters have a similar bond to the one I share with my sister. Walking hand in hand with me through life, just like the sisters in the video, Kerri has become my best friend. The lyrics speak my hope for her, similar to those any sister can relate to; as I hope that she will grow into a well-rounded woman and always choose to dance.

PYT, “We’re Dancing”: As the music begins, ballerinas are seen dancing across the floor. As the song continues, the video splices into clips of various ballerinas performing ballet moves in various settings. The scenes present the viewer with dancing attire that anyone who has taken ballet classes can recognize. When I was thirteen, it was a big deal that I was considered ready for point shoes after years of ballet dedication and practice. At the time, point shoes seemed so magical and everything about them was wonderful. The pink shade of the shoes was light and elegant looking. The satin material felt ever so snug, upon tightening the draw-string around the foot. The two, one foot long satin ribbons were sewn on near the ankle. Crossing in front and around the back, and then tied on the inside of the ankle, the ribbons wrapped ever so neatly around the ankle. Merely a thin piece of wood in the toe, it was powerful yet painful to be able to dance on point. Though I was far from being a prima ballerina, the point shoes allowed me to feel like a member of a professional ballet company, while performing leaps, turns, and many other difficult ballet moves. The light pale pink shoes formed to my foot and the arch bent to match mine, while up on my toes. It seems as though, while wearing the shoes, I felt as if I danced like the ballerinas in the video.

Drew Seeley and Belinda, “Dance With Me”: In this video several couples pair off and begin ballroom dancing. The do lifts and turns all around the large dance studio. The scene presents the viewer with a typical dance studio that is relatable to anyone who has taken dance lessons. Upon moving to Sioux Falls, I spent at least two nights a week at Main Stage Ballet and Dance Academy, as dancing has been a part of my life since I was three years old. At the time, the dance studio was a second home; in retrospect, the amount of time spent there seems a little ridiculous. The front wall of the room covered in full size mirrors allowed for perfection and improvement through viewing movements. Discipline and technique were established at the round wooden bars attached to the three white walls. The smell of sweat and rosin filled the air with an aroma of hard work and dedication. The light wood floor contained several black scuff marks from the endless hours spent dedicated to perfecting routines. A sad comparison to dance studios professionals use, the large room, upon entering though the sliding glass door, the white walls were covered with the colorful dance posters of the studio’s past recitals. The combination of the posters and light pink curtains, draped from the ends of the mirror, gave the room a homey-feeling. By the look of the studio in this video, it would appear that these dancers had an experience in a studio similar to my second home.

A*Teens, “Dancing Queen”: In the video, as the music starts, the room magically turns into a dance floor. A disco ball drops from the ceiling and lights begin to flash all around. The colorfulness and lights are similar to those of a show choir competition. At show choir competitions, which compromised my weekends during spring semesters of high school, my friends and I truly were “dancing queens” as we moved about the stage in our costumes. The royal blue skirt was made of several layers of sheer, delicate material. Upon turning, the air got underneath the knee-length material and twirled the skirt beautifully. The royal blue shade of the top matched perfectly with the skirt. Four silver, shimmery buttons closed the front of the top. The cut of the top was similar to a short sleeved jacket. Flower-shaped sequins were the only distractions from the short length and jacket-cut of the top. Completing the ensemble, the hideous, one-inch heel of the beige character shoes clicked against the stage floor during choreography. The hideous shoes, sparkly “jacket,” and knee-length blue skirt, though hideous in normal light, appeared dazzling from stage. Though laughable, the costumes, in all their glamour, allowed me and my friends to become dancing queens as we stepped on the stage at competitions. It seems as though the girls in this video also had an experience of feeling like a dancing queen.

Bruce Springsteen, “Dancing in the Dark”: As the video opens the audience members dance in the dark. The only lights are the bright, multicolored ones that shine from the stage. While dancing in the dark, on February 15, 2004 I received my first kiss. It was at my freshman year formal while I looked like a princess. The dress was a full length, light pink gown cut straight across at the top. The silver beads that covered the gown sparkled in the light from the disco ball. The beads cluttered together at the gather on the top of the dress where the material was brought together in a tight gather on the left side. The beads then became more dispersed towards the bottom of the dress. The smooth bottom was a complete contrast to the rippled effect of the gathered material of the top. The silky material swayed and swished as I moved about the floor. The skirt was composed of two layers, with the top layer separating in the front at the bottom of the gather right where the dress hit my belly button. The gown allowed me to feel like a princess as I danced in the dark with Mike. Just as in the video, while Mike held me around my waist on the dark dance floor, a fire was started with a spark. As the lights flashed, just like the video, mike leaned in and kissed me. By the words of this video, Bruce had similar experience to mine while dancing in the dark.

Garth Brooks, “The Dance”: “For a moment all the world was right. How could I have known you’d ever say goodbye?” Gath Brooks’ words are relatable to anyone who has been hurt by the pain of a relationship ending. Throughout the video, Garth Brooks is by himself singing about the pain of a love gone wrong. Coincidentally, my boyfriend Chris and I broke up after nearly six months, however, I will always hold a piece of him. The box containing his Christmas present for me said Birkenstock and contained a special pair of size seven sandals. The leather smelled heavenly and was as white as a new fallen snow. The two thick, white leather straps connected to the bottom of the sandals with silver buckles that shined like freshly polished silver metal. The comfort of the leather felt like rubbing a soft blanket as it rubbed the skin ever so gently. The clomping noise the shoes made while walking sounded like a horse hoof hitting the ground. Written on the outside edge of each sandal in black lettering was the word “Birkenstock.” The labels, in all their glory, proved the shoes authenticity. Just as the shoes were real, the relationship they represented was real. From the video, it would appear that Garth had a similar experience of love gone wrong. Seeing the shoes now reminds me that though the relationship ended and caused pain, I would not change the fact that it happened because it was a wonderful dance.

Whitney Houston, “Dance with Somebody”: This 80’s video starts out in black and white but then combines bright clothes, make up, and guys. The gray scene turned bright and lyrics provide the audience with a situation that anyone who longs for a new love can relate to. My recent Sunday evenings have been spent in colorful clothes at the Pla Mor ballroom for the weekly country dancing. The large, dark wood dance floor is filled with cowboys and cowgirls in colorful boots and cowboy hats. The hats and boots may appear laughable in everyday life, but at the Pla Mor they are high fashion. The perfect place to find a new love, the large room has a bright disco ball in the middle of the floor and a live band and slow dances. Located on the east and south sides of the room, the bands play country songs on the stages with lights flashing, providing a romantic atmosphere. Far from the popular clubs of today, the Pla Mor provides my friends and I to enter a world of hicks and play the roles of cowgirls with boots and a cowboy hat to look the part. Under the disco ball and lights from the stage, surrounded by genuinely nice cowboys, the Pal Mor has been a fun place to dance and look for a potential new boyfriend. From the look of the video, it seems that Whitney and I have shared experiences of wanting to dance with somebody who loves us.

barbie girl...

On my third birthday I received my first Barbie from my parents. I felt so cool and very grown up. She had long platinum blonde hair, light blue eyes, and a pink shiny dress. In fact on the pink box were the words “My First Barbie.” I ripped open the pink wrapping paper and was extremely exciting to see what was inside. That Barbie became my favorite toy on my third birthday. Since receiving my first Barbie I was enthralled with them throughout my childhood. I made sure that I had the latest clothes, accessories, cars, and homes for my Barbies.

As a girl who used to like playing with and dressing up Barbies, when this song was released I loathed it. I heard this song for the first time and felt as if my childhood had ended. Unfortunately, this song caused me to grow up quickly because it gave me a harsh reality check. This song is like a bad buzzing in my ear any time I hear it. “Barbie Girl” gave an immediate change of attitude towards Barbies. After hearing it, I no longer saw Barbies as being a cool, fun toy.

My interpretation of Barbies switched from childish to the way adults see them. I saw them as being ridiculous and stupid, and thus saw myself as to old and mature for them. After Aqua wrote “Barbie Girl” I never chose or wanted to play with Barbies. I not only loathe this song, but I now loath the whole idea of Barbies. These dolls are just contributing to our media’s influence in losing weight and being beautiful. The media’s interpretation of women is idealistic and unrealistic. According to the media, I am letting everyone down b y being short and having blonde hair. I dislike this song because it contributes to me feeling inferior and “not beautiful.”

stand...

I am sitting on the couch and a tear rolls down my cheek. “I am really sorry,” he says, “I just can’t do this anymore. “I understand,” I hear myself reply. “You do not love me anymore and I am just going to have to accept that,” I say. Then the motivational words of the Rascal Flatts begin playing in my head. When I was dumped by my boyfriend of nearly six months, I definitely felt like a “candle in a hurricane.”

This song entitled “Stand” has been the motivation a hope of faith through the past couple of weeks. This song really relates to my current situation. As I sat there on the couch with him looking back at me, I felt alone and helpless like I had lost my fight. However, while having time to think and be on my own, I have realized that I truly will be alright. I will get through this and life goes on. I might bend until I break because this is all I can take; however, since push came to shove I have tasted what I am made of.

While looking at his hazel eyes and short brown hair that day I realized that I had enough. I could not be with someone that did not love me back. Also, it would not be fair for me to be in a relationship with someone when we both knew it would not go anywhere. As we sat next to each other on that tan couch “I got mad” and I told him that I felt like my heart had been ripped out and that everything he had lied when he said he could see us together forever. Then I got strong and I realized that if he was dumb enough to walk away, I was going to be smart enough to let him go. So I wiped away my tears and wiped my hands and I shook off what happened. Then I decided to get up from the couch and ever since then I have chosen to “stand” and live life.

let's hear it for the boy...

This song, made famous by Denise Williams, always puts a smile on my face. I cannot help getting up and dancing whenever I hear this song. Its unique rhythm and beat make it easy to dance and sing along to. This song was made famous by the 1984 hit movie “Footloose” starring Kevin Bacon. I would have to say that the scene in the movie with this song is my absolute favorite. Willard is attempting to learn how to dance and there is no better song to learn to dance to.

I was so excited when I heard that my high school was doing Footloose for our musical my sophomore year. I would have to say it was mostly because of this song. My friends Maggie Tatone played the part of Rust and got to sing “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.” I thought that she did an amazing job and would have made Denise Williams proud. Though I did not make it into the cast of Footloose, I helped out with costumes. I was alright not making the show; I was just excited to still be involved with it.

Being a dancer all my life, I love this kind of music. I really enjoy songs that are upbeat and fun and easy to dance to. I especially like to listen to this kind of music as I work out. It pumps me up and get the endorphins going even more. This song always puts me in a good mood, no matter how crappy of a day I may be having. Whenever I hear the starting beats, I get butterflies in my stomach and get really excited. As I start to sing along, I begin to think of my crush or boyfriend and pretend I am singing about him.

the one and only...

I was introduced to the song “The One and Only” when I first watched “Doc Hollywood” starring Michael J. Fox. It was written by Nik Kershaw and recorded by Chesney Hawkes. This song really pumps me up and makes me feel good about just being me. While not everyone will like me, I am ok with that. I am comfortable with myself and I know that there are people that care about me and love me just the way I am. There are times when I feel like changing something about myself and then I realize that I would not be Katelyn anymore.

I feel that what makes a person unique is what makes them beautiful. Though some may feel they have “imperfections,” there is beauty in imperfections and it is important to learn to love them. For instance, I am short and absolutely hate my height sometimes. However, I have grown, no pun intended, to use my height to my advantage. I have also realized that my height is a characteristic that makes me unique. It is something special about me and no one can take it away from me.

Many people find it hard to “stand out from the crowd.” They often prefer to blend in with everyone else. I say that standing out from others puts someone in a special place. Often, those people who are brave enough to express their individuality are the ones who get noticed and are placed in the spotlight. For instance, look at celebrities. Do celebrities become famous by looking and acting like everyone else? Are celebrities perfect? The answer to both of these question would be no. First off, celebrities most certainly are not perfect. They are just regular people like everyone else. However, celebrities take their individuality and talent and use them to their advantage to gain attention. In this world though being “normal” and “blending in” may seem like a good idea, it is better to stand out. Everyone is unique and something special to offer, so share it with the world instead of hiding it.

Got Milk?

Who would have thought that Amanda Bynes, a butterfly, a painted on mustache, and the word “metamorphosis” could effectively sell milk? This full-page advertisement was placed in the February 2008 edition of Cosmo Girl. As so, it is clearly trying to appeal to an audience of teenagers and convince them to drink milk. Got Milk? is an American advertising campaign encouraging the purchase of cow's milk. It was created by the advertising agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners for the California Milk Processor Board in 1993 and later licensed for use by milk processors and dairy farmers. It has been running since October 1993. The campaign is credited with putting life back into milk sales nationwide after a 20-year slump. The slogan "got milk?" was licensed to the National Milk Processor Board (MilkPEP) in 1998 to use on their celebrity print ads, which since 1995, included celebrities from the fields of sports, media and entertainment, as well as fictional characters from TV and film such as The Simpsons and Batman, posing in print advertisements sporting a "milk moustache," employing the slogan, "Where's your mustache?" In order to get more young people to drink milk, this advertisement integrates the rhetorical appeals of logos and ethos, as well as the rhetorical strategies of illustration, analogy, and cause and effect.

The advertisement, seeking to get young girls to drink milk, appeals to ethos through the strategy of illustration. The appeal to character, through the use of illustration, argues that drinking milk is cool. As a celebrity and role model, Amanda Bynes, who is the focus of the advertisement, has the power to influence the decisions of many young, teenage girls. Many young women look up to Amanda and and want to be like her. Thus, it is an effective argument to use illustration to appeal to ethos. If girls think Amanda is cool and want to be like her, seeing Amanda with a milk mustache will make them want to mimic her actions and drink milk as well.

The strategy of analogy is made by the inclusion of the milk mustache. The milk mustache has become an icon of the national “Got Milk?” campaign. This long-existing million dollar campaign has been successful at getting Americans to drink milk. The milk mustache and words “Got Milk,” as icons, cause an analogy to be made to the good will of the creators of this advertisement, as it causes the viewer to associate with the good will of the campaign. The milk mustache and the image of the butterfly on Amanda’s nose also appeals to ethos through analogy. The analogy between the milk mustache and the butterfly is quite apparent, as they are both on Amanda’s face, drawing the conclusion that Amanda has turned into a beautiful betterfly by drinking milk. The combination of Amanda’s face, the milk mustache, and the butterfly work together to form the analogy that makes the inclusion of the word “Metamorphosis” appropriate and effective. Amanda, similar to the butterfly, has gone through metamorphosis since her days on “The Amanda Show.” Amanda has “transformed,” or gone through the metamorphosis from a little girl to a beautiful young woman. Amanda’s metamorphosis can happen to everyone, as seen in the use of the word “teens,” referring to all young men and women. “Grow beautiful, inside and out,” is an analogy between the butterfly, Amanda, and all teens who drink milk. This analogy boosts the good will of the advertisement, as it claims that drinking milk can help teens with their desire to be healthy and appear beautiful, similar to a butterfly or Amanda Bynes.

“Grow beautiful” also appeals to ethos through the strategy of cause and effect. This advertisement uses cause and effect to improve its character. Many teens do not want to drink milk and do not see it as necessary. However, this advertisement puts milk in a better light. It shows that the cause of drinking milk produces the effect of being healthy and having more appealing looks. As many teens value health and looks, the knowledge that milk can help teens to achieve these goals makes drinking milk more appealing. Teenage girls may say that they will try anything that can produce the effect of making them look like Amanda Bynes.

This advertisement, along with appealing to ethos, directly appeals to logos, or logic and reason. Mainly, what the article is arguing is logical. It is important to drink milk, a specific reason being “studies suggest teens who choose milk over sugary drinks tend to be leaner, plus protein helps build strong muscle.” The strategy of cause and effect is clearly being used in this statement to appeal to logos. When considering kairos, or context, it is seen as logical to be lean and muscular because those traits are associated with being healthy. Thus, cause and effect comes into play as the cause of drinking milk has the effect of being lean and muscular.

Also appealing to logos is the use of the word “studies.” In seeing the word “studies” as opposed to “people suggest” gives the advertisement credibility. In the advertisement an analogy is made between “studies” and research, knowledge, and authority. The use of the word “studies” suggests that someone knowledgeable ran tests and gathered data, as opposed to someone with no background on the subject making assumptions. The word “studies” assures the viewer that the theory is true and has been tested. “Studies,” however, can surely mean different things. The kairos, or context, also referred to as time and place, assists in establishing credibility. For instance, it can refer to school work. The idea of kairos definitely applies in this situation. Outside of the context of this article, “studies” may no longer have the same meaning and may not assist in establishing credibility.

The appeal of logos also uses the strategy of illustration. The words “body by milk” combined with the image of Amanda Bynes forms a logical argument. Amanda’s photograph logically backs up the statement. Separately, the images and words do not have the same effect. However, together, they create a powerful argument of the type of body obtainable from drinking milk. In choosing Amanda Bynes, a healthy and lean girl, the illustration, logically goes along with what the advertisement claims. The argument that “teens who choose milk tend to be leaner” would not be sound or logical if the background consisted of a heavy girl sitting on a couch watching television. The American ideal is to be lean and healthy. This advertisement is trying to argue that milk can assist in reaching that ideal. It is logical to “choose milk over sugary drinks” because it can help you to look like the image of Amanda. Choosing milk can also help you “grow beautiful,” as stated and logically supported by the use of illustration that shows off Amanda’s beauty.

This advertisement’s argument is very effective at appealing to its audience. Through the use of the appeals of logos and ethos and the rhetorical strategies of illustration, analogy, and cause and effect this advertisement effectively appeals to young women. This advertisement appeals to young women’s logic and to their ethos, causing them to see the good nature of the “Got Milk?” campaign. The structure of this advertisement effectively appeals to young women, effectively convincing them of the importance, necessity, benefits, and coolness of drinking milk. The combination of the appeals of ethos and logos works to form the sound argument favoring milk. This advertisement puts milk in a different like. It shows drinking milk as having the effect of creating images that women desire to be and that men desire to be with. So, as this advertisement convinces of the importance of the refreshing beverage that comes from cows, “Got Milk?”

Works Cited

"Got Milk?" This full-page advertisement, placed in the February 2008 edition of Cosmo Girl, is clearly trying to appeal to an audience of teenagers and get them to drink milk. Got Milk? is an American advertising campaign encouraging the purchase of cow's milk, which was created by the advertising agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners for the California Milk Processor Board in 1993 and later licensed for use by milk processors and dairy farmers. It has been running since October 1993. The campaign is credited with putting life back into milk sales nationwide after a 20-year slump. The slogan "got milk?" was licensed to the National Milk Processor Board (MilkPEP) in 1998 to use on their celebrity print ads, which since 1995, included celebrities from the fields of sports, media and entertainment, as well as fictional characters from TV and film such as The Simpsons and Batman, posing in print advertisements sporting a "milk moustache," employing the slogan, "Where's your mustache?" In order to increase the popularity of milk among young people, specifically young women, this advertisement applies the rhetorical appeals of logos and ethos through the use of the rhetorical strategies of illustration, analogy, and cause and effect.

This advertisement directly appeals to logos, or logic and reason. Mainly, what the article is arguing is logical. It is important to drink milk. Specifically, "studies suggest teens who choose milk over sugary drinks tend to be leaner, plus protein helps build strong muscle." The strategy of cause and effect is clearly being used in this statement to appeal to logos. It is logical to be thin and muscular, which can be the effect of drinking milk. Let’s face it, people do not long to be flabby and overweight.

Also appealing to logos is the use of the word "studies." The kairos, or context, also referred to as time and place, works to establish credibility. In seeing the word "studies" as opposed to "people suggest" gives the advertisement credibility. "Studies" can surely mean different things. For instance, it can refer to school work. In the advertisement an analogy is made between "studies" and research, knowledge, and authority. The idea of kairos definitely applies in this situation. Outside of the context of this article, "studies" may no longer have the same meaning.

The appeal of logos also uses the strategy of illustration. The words "body by milk" combined with the image of Amanda Bynes forms a logical argument. Amanda’s photograph logically backs up the statement. Seperately, the images and words do not have the same effect. However, together, they create a powerful argument of the type of body obtainable from drinking milk. In choosing Amanda Bynes, a healthy and lean girl, the illustration logically goes along with what the advertisement claims. The argument that "teens who choose milk tend to be leaner" would not be cound or logical if the background consisted of a heavy girl sitting on a couch watching television. The American ideal is to be lean and healthy. This advertisement is trying to argue that milk can assist in reaching that ideal. It is logical to "choose milk over sugary drinks" because it can help you to look like the image of Amanda. Choosing milk can also help you "grow beautiful," as stated and logically supported by the use of illustration, or the photograph, that shows off Amanda’s beauty.

Though Amanda assists in the appeal to logos, she contributes to the appeal of ethos as well. This advertisement, located in an edition of Cosmo Girl magazine, is attempting to appeal to a certain audience. The advertisement, seeking to get young girls to drink milk, uses the strategy of illustration to appeal to ethos. The appeal to character, through this specific strategy, argues that drinking milk is cool. As a celebrity and role model, Amanda Bynes has the power to influence the decisions of many teenage girls. Many young women look up to Amanda and and want to be like her. Thus, it is an effective argument to use illustration to appeal to ethos. If girls think Amanda Bynes is cool and want to be like her, seeing Amanda drinking milk will make them want to mimic her actions and drink milk as well.

The strategy of analogy is made by the inclusion of the milk mustache. The milk mustache has become an icon of the national "Got Milk?" campaign. This long-existing million dollar campaign has been successful at getting Americans to drink milk. The milk mustache and words "Got Milk," as icons, cause an analogy to be made to the good will of the creators of this advertisement, as it causes the viewer to associate with the good will of the campaign. The word "metamorphosis" and the image of the butterfly on Amanda’s nose also appeals to ethos through analogy. The analogy between the word "metamorphosis" and the butterfly is quite apparent, as butterflies go through the process of metamorphosis. As the butterfly is on Amanda’s nose, another analogy is formed. Amanda, similar to the butterfly, has gone through metamorphosis since her days on "The Amanda Show." Amanda’s metamorphosis can happen to everyone, as seen in the use of the word "teens," referring to all yound men and women. "Grow beautiful, inside and out," is an analogy between the butterfly, Amanda, and all teens who drink milk. This analogy boosts the good will of the advertisement, as it claims that drinking milk can help teens with their desire to be healthy and appear beautiful, similar to a butterfly or Amanda Bynes.

"Grow beautiful," using the strategy of analogy, also appeals to ethos through the strategy of cause and effect. This advertisement uses cause and effect to improve its character. Many teens do not want to drink milk and do not see it as necessary. However, this advertisement puts milk in a more positive light.

This advertisement’s argument is very effective at appealing to its audience. Through the use of the appeals of logos and ethos and the rhetorical strategies of illustration, analogy, and cause and effect this advertisement effectively appeals to young women. This advertisement appeals to young women’s logic and to their ethos, causing them to see the good nature of the "Got Milk?" campaign. The structure of this advertisement effectively appeals to young women, convincing them of the importance, necessity, benefits, and coolness of drinking milk. The combination of the appeals of ethos and logos works to form the sound argument favoring milk. This advertisement puts milk in a different light. It shows that drinking milk has the effect of creating images that women desire to be and that men desire to be with. So, just as this advertisement convinces the importance of a refreshing beverage, "Got Milk?"

Barack on the issue of education...

“I don't want to send another generation of American children to failing schools. I don't want that future for my daughters. I don't want that future for your sons. I do not want that future for America.” –Barack Obama

This quote clearly implements pathos. In referring to his daughters and America’s sons, he appeals to the audience’s emotions. He plays towards their emotions of wanting something better for the future. Though the education our parents received was not ideal, Obama uses pathos to make the audience believe that improvements can be made. While the education system has not been the greatest in the past, Obama wants the audience to believe that he can fix it and build a brighter future for our children.

This quote also clearly implements ethos. In taking this stance on education and saying how he wants a better future for America, he is making an appeal towards his character. By saying he wants to better the education system for future generations, he is hoping to improve his character. He is attempting to show the audience how he is a knowledgeable, considerate, and the best fit to deal with this issue and any others. Obama wants to seem kind hearted, yet strong at the same time. He is directly trying to persuade the audience by using his character to seem kind and the best for the job.

Demonstrated in this quote is the rhetorical strategy of comparison-contrast. He compares our parents’ generation to the generations of the future. Also, he contrasts the current failing educational system to a better one that he could create, were he elected President. He contrasts the futures that his generation received to brighter futures that he could create for future generations by fixing the education system.

Also demonstrated in this quote is the rhetorical strategy of classification and division. By saying that he does not want that future for his daughters, as well as your sons and America, he puts everyone into the same classification. Obama, by making the classification of the future generations of America, shows that a better education system would benefit everyone. He shows how the product of better school fit into the larger scheme of a brighter future for America.

Obama addresses the opposing arguments with evidence and rebuttal. One of the problems is titled “No Child Left Behind Left the Money Behind.” Here, Obama demonstrates a use of rebuttal. He states that “the goal of the law was the right one,” presenting the opinion fairly and respectfully. He then, however, demonstrates why “No Child Left Behind” by showing how it didn’t work and is not a valid argument. He says that the unfulfilled funding promises, inadequate implementation by the Education Department, and shortcomings in the design of the law limited its effectiveness and undercut its support. Another of Obama’s issues is titled “High Dropout Rate.” With this argument, Obama demonstrates a use of evidence. Obama provides statistics such as, “Only 70% of U.S. high school students graduate with a diploma,” to show how the high dropout rate is a major problem in the current educational system.

rehortical strategies in the Wal-Mart commercial...

There are several rhetorical strategies used in the Jesse McCartney Wal-Mart commercial.

For instance, the use of illustration is very apparent in this commercial. The commercial illustrates the Christmas decorations and gifts that one can buy at Wal-Mart. The tree, stockings, lights, wreaths, and garland all can assist to brighten a home for the holidays and help make the holiday extra special. Also illustrated, are the electronics that one can buy from Wal-Mart. The game boy, laptop, IPOD, and digital camera illustrate that Wal-Mart not only has beautiful decorations, but the perfect gift for everyone on a list. Wal-Mart can “hook up your home for the holidays.”

Also used in this commercial is the strategy of cause and effect. The McCartney family is having a wonderful holiday. The commercial wants the viewer to believe that a wonderful holiday comes from Wal-Mart. A wonderful holiday includes magnificent decorations and heart-felt gifts. The commercial shows that the McCartney family, with their tree, lights, wreaths, garland, and electronics, is having a great holiday thanks to Wal-Mart. IT is possible for everyone else to have a great holiday as well, they need only to shop at Wal-Mart.

This commercial also shows the process of how to use the electronics that are in the commercial. Jesse is seen playing the game boy. He demonstrates to the audience how the game boy is supposed to work. When the mom snaps a picture of her daughter, she is showing how to correctly use the digital camera. The daughter, with her ear bud headphones, demonstrates the proper use of an IPOD. Finally, the brother demonstrates one use of a laptop.

Narration is also used to represent these people as a typical ‘American family.” The mom and Jesse converse about the simple favor of “letting the cat in.” This shows the actors as normal people and how everyone can have a great holiday by shopping at Wal-Mart. The s3everal rhetorical strategies in this commercial combine to achieve one main goal. The commercial’s objective is the get the audience to shop for their holiday needs at Wal-Mart.

Extra Credit: Clean Part Reading...

"My Grandmother comes to mind." - Kate Greenstreet

My Grandma Alice comes to mind when I remember the summers of my childhood. Every summer since I was in elementary school my sister and I have gone to Ankeny, Iowa to visit our Grandma Alcie and Grandpa Dale. Our Mom and Dad would drive to meet them half way in Missouri Valley. Once our parents left, we were on our own, free to be spoiled by Grandma and Grandpa. As I relive those trips, I am reminded of specific traditions. For instance, I think of my Grandma's home-cooked meals, Godfather's Pizza, and Adventureland. Without fail, every summertime visit to Grandma and Grandpa's house contained these elements. My Grandma cooks some of the most delicious food ever. Her monkey bread, party mix, cheesy scrambled eggs, homemade pizza, and walking tacos are infamous. My mouth literally waters with excitement as I prepare to eat my Grandma's cooking. the only thing we eat when visiting that is not homemade is Godfather's Pizza. One night during each visit we call up the aunts, uncles, and cousins to have a little party at the Godfather's Pizza near our Grandparents' house. It is a great family tradition that brings us together for food, laughter, and conversation. We do not get to see each other very often so we catch up on the latest gossip as we stuff our faces full of pizza. As we satisfy our nutritional and social needs, we kill two birds with one stone. Another time we all get together during our summer visit is for our annual trip to Adventurland. Des Moines' popular amusement park is an annual family gathering spot for the Delaney family. Our fun-filled day begins with the thrill rides, continues on with the magic show, and then we take a break to eat lunch and listen to the "Soda and Sounds" singing group. Our day always end with a ride on the Ferris wheel, a stop at the candy shop to pick out a treat, and then a ride on the train. These are the things that will come to mind when I remember my Grandma. I will look back and think of all our fun times together.

All I Want For Christmas is Jesse McCartney...

As the commercial begins, we see the name “Walmart“ and a woman sitting on a couch in a living room decorated with stockings, garland, and a big Christmas tree. Her son and daughter are sitting on the other couch watching a movie on a portable lap top and listening to music on an IPOD. Then the name “Walmart” is replaced with the name “Jesse McCartney” in white letters and the title of the song “Home for the Holidays.” The music begins and Jesse himself appears playing a video game on a game boy. Jesse’s vocals begin with the words “I’m gonna be home for the holidays” and his mom takes a picture with her new black digital camera, as her daughter rolls her eyes. She then asks Jesse to let the cat in. He replies “Ok, I got it mom.” He then opens the door to a mob of girls and pays no attention to them as he is immersed in his video game. The music gets louder as the girls scream and wave their hand made signs that say such things as “Marry Me Jesse.” Jesse then shuts the door and plops down on the couch next to his mom. We here him say “Oh it feels good to be home” and he breaths a sigh of relief. The phone rings and the mom answers to hear shrieks of girls. The mom hands the phone to Jesse and says “It’s for you.” Then a green checkered background appears with white snowflakes, and in white letters we see the words “Hook up your home for the holidays- Walmart.” Jesse voice fades as he sings” I’m gonna be home for the holidays.” The screen then changes to a shot of the door from the outside and we see the wreath on the door and the back of two heads. The door opens and the girls scream but stop when they realize it is Jesse’s brother.

Extra Credit: Ben Marcus

“You love that person deeply, just not at that moment.”

Love is a very complex emotion that comes in different forms. The word “love” can represent a variety of meanings. The love one feels for his or her friends is different than the romantic love one feels for his or her significant other. True love, however, is powerful and can never die. When you love someone deeply, that feeling cannot go away. Of course, in relationships there are times when conflict and arguments arise. It is only natural to have disagreements with those you love; however, the feeling of love does not disappear. In fact, issues and disagreements are like metal bars and strengthen relationships. The act of “making up” and resolving an issue brings two people closer together because they learn something new about each other. Hilary Duff explains it well in here quote from the movie “Cheaper by the Dozen” when she says “There are times when I want to kill Sarah, but I would kill for her all the time.” I have the same feelings about my little sister Kerri. She is my best friend and I love her to death. Of course, like normal sisters, we get into stupid arguments and give each other the silent treatment. Not surprisingly, since coming to college I have really missed having her around. We used to talk to each other every day and offer one another advice. It is true that there are times when I want nothing to do with her and would rather not be around her. However, my feelings towards her are not affected by anger. I honestly do not know what I would do without Kerri. Our love is so strong that we are inseparable. Though the distance keeps us apart, we are always together in each other’s heart.

sweet music?!...

I really enjoyed our Zaireeka experiment. It was a unique experience previously foreign to me. I had never heard of synchronizing CD players, however, I was intrigued and pleased with the results. This experiment really left a positive impression on me. I must say that I walked out of the classroom on Tuesday with a new meaning of the term “music.” I used to think that music was carefully crafted songs consisting of vocals, piano accompaniment, instrumental background, time and key signatures, and crescendos and diminuendos. Furthermore, I also believed that music could only be considered beautiful by contain the perfect blend of those aspect. However, music is so much more than that. Music is a creative form of expression not constricted by rules. As I learned from the various tracks, music can even include the sounds of dogs barking, birds chirping, and the wind and rain of a powerful storm. Music is meant to relay a message to the listener, and that can be done in any way the musician sees fit. It is truly a form of art, and no matter how bizarre it may be, all music is beautiful in its uniqueness. In Women’s Choir here at Wesleyan, we are singing a song where we cluck like chickens. This song is the most outrageous piece of music I have ever sung. The Zaireeka experiment helped me realize how this song, though full of the sounds of clucking chickens, is a beautiful piece of music. I cannot help but laugh and smile, as the piano plays and I begin to cluck with my choir members. I realize that beautiful music has the power to influence moods. A song could be an obnoxious combination of instruments, a weird tempo, and peculiar lyrics can still be considered music. The term “music” is very broad and Zaireeka opened my eyes to the truth and diminished my stereotypes of “beautiful music.”

"Zaireeka"...

“Track number 1…track number one…track number one…track number one.” “This is CD number 1…number 2…number 3…and number 4.” Each of the four CD players placed strategically on each of the four sides of the room takes a turn in introducing the first song of our experiment. The drums and symbols begin the song with a catchy, upbeat tempo as sound beings to fill the room. The vocals enter and I hear a male voice sing the lyrics “Go On” from the CD player on my left. I hear the entrance of the guitar’s upbeat tempo to the player on my left and then an echo appears in my right. Though words can be heard distinguished at times, most of the song is powerful waves of sound that wash out the vocals. As track two begins, the CDs count themselves off in a robotic fashion. It begins with the gentleness of strings. A large crescendo takes place, followed by unexpected stillness. The vocals enter and become the main focus. The sounds of powerful drums are heard on my right and then the drums enter from the other CD players in a round, one by one. The basses enter on the left and right, as if in a duel, going back and fourth. Vocals surround from all directions and make the words in comprehendible. Light symbols and drums play as the song ends and silence returns. As track three begins the lyrics “Gone insane” describe the crazy, accelerating tempo. As the lyrics wrestle back and fourth between CD players, it becomes apparent that the CDs are even more out of synch than before. Track four enters with two definite beats of the drum and single guitar strums. The guitar clashes with the symphonic sounds that I hear to my left and great dissonance arises. Chaos of competing tempos arises and then the sounds of chirping birds fill the room. It sounds like a flock of excited birds ready to attack. The noise builds up and then a light ending calms the mood. Track five begins with gentle, light strums of a guitar bombarded suddenly by powerful drums from all directions. Track six was simply a track of high pitches and nothing else. The piano begins track 7 lightly, followed by a powerful crescendo of drums . However, the drums back down to and the sound of a powerful storm arises with much wind and rain. Track eight entered with a light and happy mood. A man’s voice is heard from across the room and he talks about stuffed animals. Then, as the song nears it ending, chaos arises and the room fills with the sound of angry barking dogs. Then suddenly, all is quiet again.

Project 1: I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream

The moment I see the three story brick building my mouth begins to water. The sign in the front window is a lit-up clock with a circle of a bright pink neon light around the edge. Above the clock, in neon green lights are the words “Time to eat.” Just underneath the clock, lit up in white, are the two favorite words of anyone with a sweet tooth “Ice Cream.” I can barely contain my excitement as I walk up the gray cement steps with my tall, blonde haired, friend Lauren and entered Ivanna Cone, the infamous, one and only, homemade ice cream parlor and soda fountain in Lincoln. As a native of the home of the Huskers, I had made a few visits to Ivanna Cone when I was younger. However, I never really thought much about this small business known by all the natives. As a child, I was only interested in enjoying the smooth texture of the premium ice cream. Now, returning to my home town as a first year in college, older and wiser, I was determined to find out what made this small business so special. I realized that this shop was more than just a place to get ice cream, and hidden in the unique atmosphere are symbols and values of our culture.

“Why, yes! We make it all right here!” I read these words written in bright yellow chalk on army green chalkboard as I enter, and realize their significance. Our society loves anything home-made; it gives the product a unique, authentic quality. In a society where convenience is the main concern of businesses, product quality has decreased in importance. Modern day production relies greatly on machines as the ideal way of achieving optimal efficiency. However, the distinct taste of something homemade by hand from scratch, cannot be recreated.

My eyes are drawn to the two large black ice cream mixers to my right that look as if they are genuine old-fashioned mixtures nearly fifty years old with white residue on the exterior. They are separated from me by a silver metal rail. It is as if the railing is symbolizing a barrier to the secrecy of what makes the ice cream so special and unique. Ivanna Cone uses the good old-fashioned ice and salt method to make their premium ice cream flavors, which include sweet cream vanilla, dutch chocolate, pralines and cream, red raspberry, french vanilla, lemon custard, amaretto-peach strawberry, banana, peanut butter chocolate, mint chip, rum raisin, maple grapenut, vanilla ice milk, triple berry sherbert, and lastly mango sherbet. The aroma of the shop is the perfect combination of the wide selection of ice cream flavors. The scent of vanilla and chocolate mix perfectly with the sweet odor of banana to create a smell that makes me suddenly very hungry for a banana split. As I look through this list of “Today’s Flavors” (in the order above) on the large green chalkboard on the pink wall behind the counter, I can’t seem to make up my mind; they all excite my taste buds as I imagine how each flavor would taste on my tongue. Like a child in a candy shop, I long to sample all the varieties.

I am dumb-founded as the tall, dark, and handsome soda jerk in front of me asks “How may I help you?” The critical moment is upon me. The flavors were written in various colors that match the shades of the flavors of ice cream, with white for the varieties of vanilla and bright yellow for lemon custard. The words “Today Flavors” written on the large green chalkboard reminded me that the flavor options would differ the next day, thus I had to make the perfect decision. So to help me make my crucial assessment, I seek the expert advice from Sam the soda jerk. He is an authority figure, wearing a uniform consisting of medium-wash jeans with a few rips that give the pants a sense of authenticity and a red t-shirt with the word “Huskers” in bold, white lettering underneath a white apron. After testing banana, and amaretto-peach strawberry, my tastebuds go crazy as I attempt to decide which one is most appealing. Lauren made her choice and informed Sam saying, in a tone full of hunger, “I’ll take Peanut Butter Chocolate.” My sweet tooth longs for sugar and I dreamily look into Sam’s blue eyes and say “Banana.”

Located in the creamery shop in the historic Haymarket of downtown Lincoln, Ivanna Cone is part of the culture in the capital city. The red “Husker” t-shirt worn by the soda jerk is a representation of another unique aspect of Lincoln.

The capital city is most famous for being the home of the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. However, Ivanna Cone, though not as big as Husker football, is an aspect of Lincoln that makes this city different from any other. Residents of Lincoln are proud to be the home of Ivanna Cone. The home-made, supreme ice cream, served in a Styrofoam dish, is as integral a part of the city as the color red. As my standard-sized white Styrofoam bowl containing “Banana” Ice cream was handed to me, I knew that I was in for a treat. The creamy, seemingly airless textured, large off-white scoop of ice cream filled the bowl, even though I ordered a “small” dish.

As I sit in the wire-rimmed chair and place my white dish on the square black table with a white edge, I admire the appealing colors all around me. The pink paint on the walls fills the room with a sense of happiness, along with the stripes of pink, green, and purple paint along the bottom of the counter. The light fixtures hanging from the ceiling above the counter supply the room with white incandescent light and provide the sole air of elegance. As ice cream serves, literally and figuratively, as a form of comfort in America, the bright colors of the shop assist in providing an atmosphere that help in creating a feeling of comfort. The calming mood provided by the little shop, in a joint effort with my dish of Banana ice cream amazingly improved my mood. Ivanna Cone’s delicious ice cream and bright array of colors help to promote a feeling of happiness; a quality highly valued in society today.

Ice cream and music both provide happiness and comfort a sour mood; however, together they have a stronger impact than when separated. As the banana ice cream, multi colored light strands decorating the outer edges of the front window, and soft white incandescent light fixtures all assist in creating my feeling of joy, Jack Johnson’s voice in the background is the cherry on top. “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing” comes on over the speakers and fills the colorful room. The coldness of the rich, velvety, seemingly airless ice cream, along with the soothing quality of Jack Johnson’s voice, calm my throat and mind.

My friend Lauren and I begin to sing along at our secluded table around the corner, as we are the only two people occupying the empty shop. While sitting there, I watch two young African American men enter the purple wooden door with green accents. After the two young men had placed their orders and were sitting at a table about nine feet from us, a young woman with long blond hair and a tall brunette arrive with two handsome, dark haired gentlemen and place their order at the white linoleum counter.

America is a nation with many traditions. The Pledge of Allegiance, baseball, apple pie, and old-fashioned ice cream shops have withstood the test of time and will always be a part of our culture. Ivanna Cone, with its black-wire chairs, and old-fashioned glass sundae dishes represent how some things never go out of style in American culture. We respect our past because it is a part of who we are and defines us as a country. In a society where technological advances are happening every day, we still prefer the old-fashioned method of making ice cream. The salt and ice combined with the perspiration produced from the manual labor of cranking the silver handle is what makes the ice cream taste so sweet. The enjoyment I felt from the combination of the mellow sound of John Mayer, the Banana flavor of my ice cream, and the authentic ice cream parlor décor was indescribable. I realized that what makes Ivanna Cone so great is the experience. Visitors to the historic creamery building can expect more than just good ice cream. Ivanna Cone’s air combines the happiness and relief that could be found in an genuine ice cream and soda shop that our parents visited as young adults, aided by the unbeatably satisfying taste of old-fashioned homemade ice cream, relaxing music, and social interaction among friends and family; it is almost like being in the fifties, but without sock hops, bobby socks, and poodle skirts.

I wanna hold your hand...

“My hands are small I know, but they’re not yours they are my own.” The hand is a part of the body that we rely on greatly each and every day. To me, hands are a symbol of individuality. Everyone’s hands are different sizes and have different textures. Some may be big and rough, while others are small and smooth. Hands are just another feature that separates one person from everyone else. Hands also represent a sense of comfort and intimacy. It is comforting for a baby to hold his or her mother’s finger after they are born. Holding the mother’s hand, the baby knows that there will always be someone there to provide protection, nurturing, love, and support. However, holding hands can comfort someone of any age, not just those who are young. Whenever something bad happens, holding someone’s hand can help to ease the pain. The connection that is felt when holding hands makes one realize that he or she is not alone. The support given from holding hands makes one feel that he or she has the power to make it through anything. Along with creating a feeling of comfort, the act of holding hands is also viewed as an act of intimacy. The Beatles song “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” represents the deep symbolism hidden beneath the simple act of holding hands. Teenage girls, for instance, dream of holding hands with the boy they like. Holding hands, in one aspect, is seen as an act of romance. It is an outward sign of the bond of love that the two people share. When the love blossoms to the point of marriage, the hand serves as a display case for a symbol of committed love. When the left ring finger is decorated, it means that particular man or woman always has a hand to hold.

music for a deserted island paradise...

If I had to choose between being stuck in a dark, scary, dried up well or lying in the sun on a sandy beach, I would have to go with the beach. I am extremely afraid of dark, small place so I would not be able to handle being trapped in a well. I would prefer to take more than five cassette tapes because I have many favorites; however, five is better than none at all. The five albums I would choose would be: Love, Melt, The Spirit Room, How to Save a Life, and Move Along. My first choice would be Love by The Beatles. I have always enjoyed The Beatles and could listen to them all day. Hearing my boys sing the words “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” makes me melt every time. This brings me to my next album, Melt, by the Rascal Flatts. I was first introduced to the Rascal Flatts by my mom. I enjoy their rich voices and how they bring a unique upbeat to country love songs. Michelle Branch is one of my favorite female singers. I love her unique style and messages. I enjoy listening to her when I am driving in the car on a warm summer day and my sum roof is open. Her voice and words always seem to put me in a good mood. I have been in love with The Fray ever since I first heard “How To Save a Life.” Whenever I get stressed out I listen to “Over my Head” and scream into a pillow. Amazingly, this helps me calm down and not take things so seriously. My final choice Move Along will provide the twist in music I will need in the island to remain entertained. Rocking out to All American Rejects is one of my favorite past times. Listening to “Dirty Little Secret” and dancing around like a crazy person never fails to put a huge smile on my face.

experiencing southpointe....

Malls have become an integral part of American culture. Teenagers, as well as senior citizens, enjoy browsing the store windows and seeing the latest must-haves. Malls have everything from shoes, clothes, and jewelry to the latest technology. However, a mall is no longer just a place where people go shopping. Nowadays, a trip to the mall is an experience. Malls are filled with action, people, clothes, food, and good times. Young people, especially, view the mall as a fun spot to hang out with friends. Malls have become increasingly complex over the recent decades. In addition to department stores, malls now include food courts, arcades, movie theatres, and even amusement parks. Malls have become accommodating to all different kinds of people. A mall is now a place that has a little something that everyone can enjoy. For instance, right here in Lincoln, at SouthPointe Pavilions Mall, there is always something going on. SouthPointe has a wide variety of apparel and accessory stores to satisfy every consumer’s clothing, shoes, jewelry, and other fashion needs. However, with the convenient location of the movie theatre, SouthPointe also has the ability to satisfy the entertainment needs and wants of both shoppers and non-shoppers alike. The vast assortment of eateries conveniently provides the necessary energy that shoppers need to continue on their spending spree. The atmosphere is very energetic and even slightly chaotic at times, especially around the holidays when shoppers are frantically searching for “the perfect gift.” The sights and smells change with the seasons. During the fall, for instance, the Lincoln Arts Festival is put on in the parking lot. With various booths of authentic jewelry, paintings, purses, and delicious-smelling food, this occasion draws a large, diverse crowd. Also, during Christmastime, the smells of candy canes and peppermint fill the stores, contributing to the holiday cheer. There is so much to be seen and heard at SouthPointe and every trip is an adventure that will excite the senses.

my passion...

"What are my passions? After much thought and analysis, I came to the conclusion that I don’t really have one main passion."
–Tristan Darling

I, like Tristan, would consider myself a complex person. I have a wide variety of passions that make up my personality. Although, I would say that the thing that makes me “tick” is probably singing. I have been singing since I learned to talk. As a little girl, I would sing along to my Dad’s favorite country songs. In fact, there is an embarrassing home video of the three year old version of me performing “She’s in Love With the Boy.” Ever since I was young, singing has been a part of me. It has always been an outlet for me and the way that I express myself. Music is my way of relieving stress and improving my mood, similar to running. Throughout school, choir has always been a break in my day. I have always looked forward to the time when I can be “footloose” and focus on something that I truly enjoy. It is a time when I can let go of my worries about school and friends and the future. When I sing, my true colors come shining through. I can forget about the outside world for a little while and feel comfortable just being me. I feel free when I am singing, whether that would be in the shower or on a stage. When I sing, my anxious nature just seems to disappear and I get a “sugar rush.” It could be the worst day of my life and I could be in the worst mood, but if I get a chance to sing I will end up having a huge smile on my face. The power of music is truly remarkable. Music can provide motivation, hope, and faith. One of my favorite songs that has been an inspiration to me is “When You Believe” from “The Prince of Egypt.” As represented by this uplifting song, music is truly a gift from God, and I thank him for it every day.

so much better...

Musicals are one of America’s greatest past times. I absolutely adore getting all dressed up and going to the theatre. The lights, costumes, and scenery are thrilling. Ever since I was a little girl, I have fantasized of being in a Broadway production. Singing, acting, dancing, and being on the stage are my passions. This past March, one of my lifelong dreams was fulfilled. My high school concert choir took a trip to the big apple, and I am not talking about fruit. I am referring to the city of lights and Broadway, the great New York City. I got to spend five days surrounded by billboards and lights with about fifty of my good friends. It was an experience that changed my life and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. As I walked along Times Square it was just like being in a movie. It was as if I had left reality and entered some alternate universe called Broadway. It was a magical place with lions, flying nannies, and a blonde girl aspiring to be a lawyer and win back the heart of her love. “Legally Blonde: The Musical” is one of my newest Broadway obsessions. I nearly screamed with excitement when I saw the billboard for it in NYC. The music in it has really had an impact on my life. This song in this video “So Much Better” is my motto. I was recently very ill and ended up in the hospital, and was not doing very well for quite some time. However, know that I am fully recovered these lyrics ring in my ears. Now that I am back I am extremely motivated and nothing is going to stop me. I feel “so much better than before, “and I am determined to not let anything stand in my way.

essay on anthony's essay

“This quote applies to me because up until my senior year of high school I'd been told what to write about, and how to write it.” –Anthony Diers

I empathize with Anthony because I have had a similar experience in my educational career. My teachers always told me what to write about and I felt extremely limited. It always seemed like I was not able to truly express myself. The point of writing is for an individual to express his personal thoughts and feelings. It seems unrealistic to force someone to have feelings on a topic that he is not passionate about. Also, it seems unfair to force someone to care about something he is ignorant of, or does not have a particular opinion on. On the other hand, I can see why teachers assign specific topics. Teachers want the students to become well-rounded, well-educated individuals. Teachers aspire to assist the students in learning the material presented in the textbook, as well as information about themselves as individuals. Writing outside of one’s comfort zone increases his knowledge of himself and the world around him. One can find new interests, passions, and traits to his personality by expanding his horizons and writing outside the box. It is said that “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.” This is extremely true of writing. The experience and growth is what is most important. When it comes to writing, practice is what helps one to grow. Practice provides a writer with confidence, ease, and experience for the future. The more one writes, just like with anything else, the better one becomes at it. As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” It is also true that great writers are not created over night. It takes time, patience, and practice to develop one’s unique voice and style. Also, unfortunately it means doing things that one does not necessarily want to do, which includes writing about topics that may not seem “appealing.”

Quotation from Atwan02

"I am predisposed to the essay with knowledge to impart-but, unlike journalism, which exists primarily to present facts, the essays transcend their data, or transmute it into personal meaning. The memorable essay, unlike the article, is not place or time bound; it survives the occasion of its original composition. Indeed, in the most brilliant essays, language is not merely the medium of communication; it is communication."

-Joyce Carol Oates

As a writer, I have envisioned being remembered long after my time. While reading quotes by various essayists, the title “The Memorable Essay,” leaped off the page. Since I first put pen to paper, I have always longed to write a piece so intuitive and creative that it would still be inspiring readers for years to come. However, before reading Oates’s words, I never imagined an essay holding that kind of power. I always thought essays were informative and focused on the facts. How could something filled with data and quotes be memorable? I had always associated memorable writing with creative ideas and sensory details that caused the reader’s imagination to come alive. However, as Oate’s explained, an essay is distinctly different from journalism and articles, which seek solely to inform. Oate’s words opened my mind to what an essay truly is. There is so much more to an essay than one might think. A good essay presents facts, but also gives them personal meaning. An essay is made memorable in its ability to connect and relate to its readers. Whereas an article stays in a person’s memory until the next magazine or newspaper is delivered, a good essay can make an impression that lasts a lifetime. As Oates explains, in a great essay, time and place are not barriers. It is an essay’s ability to give mere facts and data personal meaning that makes it memorable. The facts are presented in such a way that everyone feels a sincere connection to the topic, even if the topic is an issue that took place fifty years before they were born. As Oate’s describes it, in a good essay, the author’s language is communication. The words, ideas, statistics, and thoughts speak to the reader and create an intense feeling of solidarity.

Information on Joyce Carol Oates:

New York State Writers Institute

Celestial Timepiece: A Joyce Carol Oates Home Page

Test Post

Here is a link to our course's Main Page.
